Fans Weigh in

We’re 3 games down the pipe and, as far as the Riders are concerned, there is a lot to talk about!

This week, we asked Rider Nation their opinion about how the new roster is shaking out and fans were pretty positive

Nearly half of Rider fans (47%) feel the team has made positive roster changes since last season.

When it comes to fans with a less positive outlook, it turns out just over 1 in 10 (16%) feel the team hasn’t improved its roster since last season – another 37% of the fans we contacted weren’t sure.

About 1/4 of the fans we surveyed have already attended a game in the new Mosaic Stadium

Below is a word-cloud that shows how fans felt about their experience in the Riders’ new home:

An infographic representing Riders fan sentiment based on fans’ exact their predictions for the coming season – words repeated more often are displayed larger than those used less often.

With 3 games in the bag, 1 win and 2 losses, it seems like Rider Nation is pretty positive about how things are unfolding this season.

The new Mosaic stadium considered a season strength with Rider fans

After these last 3 games, fans consistently feel the top 3 strengths the team has this year are the fan atmosphere at the games (56%), having a new stadium to play in (51%) and the Riders’ offensive passing game (40%)*.

Below are a few fan comments about the season so far:

Here’s what other SaskWatch members had to say!

“Close the revolving door of players. Develop talent.”

“Stay focused and motivated. Always play with the team in mind. Keep bleeding green!”

“Don’t be overconfident and stay focused for all the quarters. The coach might have to change his attitude or maybe we should consider another coach.”

“Get rid of the field goal kicker.”

“Not sure. I am on the fence with some of the decisions made the last couple of years and some of the players released. The media and the fans have gotten way too excited about the first two losses.”

“Offence is OK – defence needs to pull up its socks a bit.”

Riders Fans Have High Hopes for the 2017 Season

When Insightrix asked the people of Saskatchewan for their predictions and opinions on how they think the Saskatchewan Roughriders will do in the 2017 season, it turned out…..

Rider fans have tentative opinions about their roster

Twenty-nine percent (29%) agree, either somewhat or strongly, changes made to the roster have been positive. However, 16% disagree (somewhat or strongly) and state the roster changes have been negative.

Welcome new Mosaic
Riders fans who have been there are much more enthusiastic about their new stadium. When we asked Riders fans what they thought about where the Riders do business, the new Mosaic Stadium, most fans’ (92%) opinions of the venue ran from pretty good to awesome. Only 3% of those surveyed believe the stadium needs improvement.

“Battle of Regions” Winner

This year, Insightrix hosted, for the first time, the “Battle of Regions” fan contest. The contest was held via the Rider Tracker, as a brand new initiative as part of our weekly ‘Rider fan survey, on SaskWatch.ca. Fans from all over Saskatoon, Regina, our Northern region, and Southern Saskatchewan earned cumulative points throughout the Roughrider season for predicting actual Rider game stats. The winning region not only received bragging rights, but also to win cash money for their charity of choice. Insightrix donated $1,000 to a charity determined by the winning region’s popular vote.

Despite the tough season for our Green and White, Insightrix had a great time engaging with Saskatchewan residents through our dedicated fan site, www.letsgoriders.com.

In its first year, the “Battle of Regions” was a back and forth season- with Regina taking home first place by only a single point!!!

The “Battle of Regions” Final Scores are as follows:

Regina: 41
Southern Saskatchewan: 40
Saskatoon: 38
Northern Saskatchewan: 36
As for the Insightrix self-declared “experts” point total, the team finished on the plus side with 37.

Insightrix and SaskWatch Research™ would like to congratulate our Regina panelists who took the Rider Tracker survey, and everyone who participated in this year’s “Battle of Regions” fan contest.

On behalf of the winning region, Regina, Insightrix has donated $1,000 to the Regina Humane Society.

2014 ‘Rider Tracker- Going into the Season Opener

Now in its fourth straight year, a weekly poll conducted by Insightrix Research Inc. asks a random selection of fans on the SaskWatch Research™ online panel about their opinions of the ’Riders’ performance and predictions for the rest of the season. Two hundred fans from across the province complete a survey shortly after each game is played. Watch for weekly updates and post your thoughts and comments based on what fans are saying!

Upcoming Game Prediction & Score

The ’Riders came up just short of a victory and a perfect pre-season record in last Friday’s game against Edmonton. As the regular season is set to begin and the ’Riders prepare to square off in a Grey Cup rematch against Hamilton, the 1-1 pre-season record is now behind the Green and White. Many fans are hopeful that the ‘Riders will win their first game of the season with the index on the positive side at +74. This index is calculated by taking the proportion who say the ’Riders will “Absolutely win or chances look good” and subtracting the proportion who believe things are “Not looking very good or that there is no chance at all.” Fans are predicting that the ’Riders will defeat the Ti-Cats by ten points with average final scores coming in at 27 for Saskatchewan and 17 for Hamilton.

Grey Cup Confidence Index

The Grey Cup Confidence index is calculated as follows: When presented with the question “How confident are you that the ’Riders’ will win the Grey Cup this year?” the percentage of respondents who said “No chance at all” or “Not looking very good” is subtracted from the percentage who answered “Absolutely. The Cup is ours” or “Chances look good.”

Despite the loss against Edmonton, fans still have high hopes that the ’Riders will retain the Grey Cup this year, with the index sitting at +46.

Team Performance Index

Though down ten points since last week, the team performance index remains on the positive side at +29, with fans relatively positive about how their ’Riders performed in the second pre-season game against the Eskimos. This index is calculated by subtracting the percentage of people who answered that the team’s performance in that game was “Atrocious” or “Poor” from the percentage who answered “Excellent” or “Very good.”

Turning to specific elements of the team, indices have been calculated based on fans’ impressions of the ’Riders’ performance in the second pre-season game. Most specific position indices have fallen after the loss against Edmonton except for the coaching index which rose four points to +52 and remains highest rated for this week. As the Green and White are still trying to figure out their offensive backfield, the running game again earns the lowest performance rating this week slipping 12 points to +16.

Selected Quotes

“Some of the new backs look good but I am still worried we won’t be a ground threat without Sheets.”

“Our boys looked pretty good even though they lost but we need to fire on all cylinders in the season opener.”

“The coaching staff are doing a great job rotating and trying out players. We just need to have a solid team on the field for next week.”

Upcoming Game Prediction & Score

If one didn’t know any better, he or she might have thought the most recent ’Rider game was held in Turnover Town and not Regina. The conditions were cold and slippery at Mosaic as B.C. and Saskatchewan together gave up the ball ten times. Thankfully, other than points put up by B.C. in the first quarter, most of the turnovers went in favour of the Green and White. Now with three wins in a row going into the final two weeks of the regular season, the Roughriders’ momentum has fan confidence in winning the next game against the Stampeders sitting at +56. This index is calculated by taking the proportion who say that the ’Riders will “Absolutely win or chances look good” and subtracting the proportion who believe things are “Not looking very good or that there is no chance at all.” Fans predict that the ’Riders will defeat the Stampeders by a
single field goal, with average final scores coming in at 26 for Saskatchewan and 23 for Calgary.

The dominating performance against the Lions has the Grey Cup confidence index on the rise this week, increasing 29 points to +42.

Team Performance Index

The strong team play by the Green and White has the overall team performance index up 28 points this week and currently sitting at +44. This index is calculated by subtracting the percentage of people who answered that the team’s performance in that game was “Atrocious” or “Poor” from the percentage who answered “Excellent” or “Very good.”

This index is calculated by taking the proportion who say that the ’Riders will “Absolutely win or chances look good” and subtracting the proportion who believe things are “Not looking very good or that there is no chance at all.” Fans predict that the ’Riders will defeat the Alouettes by a wide margin, with average final scores coming in at 32 for Saskatchewan and 20 for Montreal.

Upcoming Game Prediction & Score

Last week fans again predicted a win for the ‘Riders. However, the opposite result unfolded. In a hard fought game against Montreal, the ‘Riders came up short but have still clinched a playoff spot thanks to a Hamilton loss. Despite the tough loss, confidence in winning the next game is again positive. Presently, the index sits at +47, meaning a majority of fans believe the ‘Riders can pull off the win against Toronto this weekend. Final score predictions for the coming game suggest a victory for the Roughriders, with averages coming in at: Saskatchewan: 29, Toronto: 22.

Grey Cup Confidence Index

Following the loss, the Grey Cup index is down again this week and remains in the negatives. The Cup index fell a drastic 19 points to -46, showing that a majority of fans do not believe the ‘Riders will obtain the Grey Cup this year.
